Livni says previous attempts to set deadline for ME peace talks failed

Responding to a Palestinian demand for a timeline, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Thursday that all previous attempts to set deadlines for peace talks failed and only led to disappointment and violence.
Livni heads the Israeli negotiating team trying to work out a joint declaration with the Palestinians on the principles of a future peace deal. She said she was to meet later Thursday with the head of the Palestinian team, Ahmed Qureia.
Earlier this week, Qureia said there would be no talks with Israel unless a deadline is set for establishing a Palestinian state.
"Creating timetables, which are often not carried out, as it happened every time in the past, creates expectations that are then not carried out, and create violence and terror," she said in a joint news conference with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
