Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal called on Hamas and Fatah activists on Friday to "fight Israel rather than each other." He claimed that the two movements could reach an agreement under the common platform of liberation of Palestine, non-recognition of Israel and the adoption of holy war and an armed struggle to achieve their goals. Mashaal did not comment on a peace initiative proposed Thursday by former Fatah-Tanzim head Marwan Barghouti, in which he accepted the 1967 lines as borders of a future Palestinian state. A document composed by Barghouti from inside the Israeli prison where he is incarcerated, outlined the terms of an agreement to quell the tensions between Fatah and Hamas, and was approved by Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Mashaal recently accused Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of conspiring with the US and Israel to bring down the Hamas cabinet.
