German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba for talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II amid new momentum to resolve the lingering Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
Merkel, who is also the President of the European Council, wants to add Europe's push to growing diplomatic efforts by the US and UN - and what the EU as hopeful signs from an Arab summit earlier this week in Saudi Arabia.
The summit called on Israel to accept a land-for-peace plan that gives Israel full recognition and peace with Arab countries in return for withdrawal from territory captured in the 1967 Six Day War. The plan also calls for what it defines a "just solution" for Palestinian refugees and a Palestinian state with its capital in east Jerusalem. Jordan's king is one of the strongest proponents of the Arab plan.
The Aqaba meeting is the first leg of Merkel's three-day Mideast tour that includes Israel, the Palestinian Terrorities and Lebanon. It is her third trip to the area.
