Senior aide to Abbas says talks on Palestinian unity government have been suspended
Talks on a Palestinian unity government have been suspended, and no new meetings are scheduled, a senior aide to President Mahmoud Abbas said Monday.
Abbas had met repeatedly last week with Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas to discuss the distribution of government portfolios among Hamas and Abbas' Fatah party. However, serious disagreements emerged, with Fatah accusing Hamas of being unreasonable in demanding control over the finance and interior ministries.
Abbas aide Nabil Amr said no progress has been made in recent days. "We would say talks are suspended now," Amr told a news conference.
Amr said much work remains to be done. "What we have agreed upon is only the first mile over the 1,000-mile road," he said.
