Peres to attend Saudi interfaith conference

President Shimon Peres will be joining Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah at a UN interfaith conference this month. The two countries do not have diplomatic relations and their heads of state have not met publicly. Peres has endorsed a peace initiative drafted by the Saudi king. A Peres spokeswoman said Wednesday it was not clear whether the two would meet to directly discuss the plan. The Saudi proposal would have Israel withdraw from all land it captured in the 1967 Mideast war. In exchange, the Arab world would recognize the Jewish state. Israel is not willing to give up all the captured land but has expressed interest in the plan as a basis for talks. The conference in New York is the second in a series of interfaith dialogues Abdullah has promoted.
