Turkish troops shelled a border area in northern Iraq early Sunday in an attack on Kurdish rebels based there, a pro-Kurdish news agency reported. The report could not immediately be confirmed.
Citing the Kurdish rebel group PKK, the Belgium-based Firat news agency said Turkish artillery targeted the Hakurk area in northern Iraq and that no casualties were reported. Firat did not name its source in the rebel movement.
Turkish authorities, who have called the Firat agency a mouthpiece of the PKK, were not immediately available to comment.
Kurdish guerrillas have long had camps in the Hakurk area, 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Turkish border.
