Saudi Arabia beheads man convicted of murder

Saudi authorities on Sunday beheaded a man convicted of fatally shooting another man during a dispute, the official Saudi Press Agency said Sunday. The agency quoted an Interior Ministry statement, saying that Khaled Bin Abdul-Aziz al-Baze'ei was executed in the eastern city of Qatif. Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed, usually with a sword. According to an Associated Press count, Sunday's execution brings to 82 the number of people beheaded this year in the kingdom. Last year, 137 people were beheaded, up from 38 in 2006.
