Suicide bomber kills 7 at police checkpoint northeast of Baghdad

Seven people were killed Sunday in a suicide car bombing at a police checkpoint in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi police said. Police Col. Ahmed Khalifa, chief of Jalula police station, said one police officer and six civilians died in the attack. The attack in Jalula also injured five police and two civilians. The checkpoint that was targeted is near a military base and an office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a Kurdish political party. The attack came several hours after Iraq's Cabinet approved a security pact with the United States that will allow American forces to stay in Iraq for three years after their UN mandate expires on Dec. 31.
