Husband of gunned-down Lod woman accused of her murder

The husband of a woman brutally gunned down outside a cemetery in Lod last month will be charged with her murder, as well as an attempt on her life six months ago, police said on Thursday.On April 4, the body of Yasmin Abu Zaaluk was found riddled with bullets. Police said she had been killed execution- style and launched an intensive 40-day homicide investigation, headed by Ch.-Supt. Shimon Elimelekh from the Shfela police’s investigations branch.The homicide sent shockwaves through the Arab community in Israel, as Zaaluk had been told by community notables in Lod to return to her husband twice, directly ignoring the warnings made by police.Zaaluk went missing a year ago before being found, and was shot at six months ago, in what police described as an attempted murder by her husband.Throughout April, homicide detectives “followed an early line of inquiry that led to her husband, Khaled Abu Zaaluk,” police said in a statement.“We have gathered evidence that links the suspect to the shooting and the previous attempted murder,” police added.Khaled will be charged with homicide at the Ramle Magistrate’s Court next week.Attorney Reda Jaber, who is a coordinator of the Arab Society – Police Relations Initiative, told The Jerusalem Post last month that the slaying has led to a double crisis of confidence in Lod.“Police must go beyond issuing warnings. If there was a chance to protect her, if there is intelligence on threats to her, she should have been given active protection,” Jaber said.“At the same time, she was given promises by notables that she would be safe, that nothing bad would happen to her. And yet she was murdered. This is despicable, and unprecedented in Arab society.”
