Thomas Burberry, a British textile business owner, established the fashion house Burberry in 1856 in Hampshire with the goal of producing work coats that would cater to farmers and ranchers on rainy days when they are working in the field. In 1879, Burberry produced the fabric gabardine, which is resistant to rain. He began to produce items of clothing from it, including the trench coat. Gabardine, made of solid cotton, is a breathable, waterproof and weatherproof fabric that is airy and comfortable.
A military heritage: The birth of the trench coat
The trench coat made its debut on soldiers in the trenches of WW I. This proves how much the mythology of heroism and courage is woven into the fabric of the trench coat, which has since taken on a multitude of versions, fabrics, and colors.
In 1891, Burberry opened his first store in London, and the coat gained momentum. Its qualities reached the ears of the British army, which was looking for clothing solutions for soldiers fighting in the trenches. Thus Burberry's first large order came from the British army.

The metal ring was later removed, but the shoulder straps are present in some designs to this day.
At the end of WW I, the soldiers returned to their countries with the trench coats and wore them as civilians. In 1918, with the end of the war, Harper's Bazaar magazine identified the fashionable potential of the trench coat and added it to the women's wardrobe.
Over the years, the trench coat became detached from its military context and became an integral part of the fashion world. It swept the world in WW II, when all European armies adopted it and its cut.
