Miki Dorsman made a surprise return to Hapoel Holon on Thursday when he was named as Amir Uzi's replacement as coach.
The 44-year-old Dorsman owned and coached Hapoel Holon between 2002 and 2008, guiding the team to a historic championship in the 2007/08 season with a dramatic victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv. However, just a few weeks after the unforgettable triumph, Dorsman announced that he was leaving the club, both as owner and coach.
In November, 2008 he made a brief return to coaching, but quit his position at Maccabi Rishon Lezion after just one month
Holon had repeatedly claimed in recent weeks that Uzi's job is safe despite the team's 1-7 start to the BSL season. However, after being given a financial boost by a fans fundraiser earlier this week, the club decided it was time for a change.
"I'm happy to be back to a place I love. Our first goal is to stay in the league," said Dorsman.
Also Thursday, Arik Shivek was officially appointed as the new Israel coach. The Israel Basketball Association board ratified the professional committee's recommendation and named the 53-year-old as Tzvika Sherf's replacement.
Ironi Nahariya coach Ya'acov Jino was named as the Under-20 national team coach and Danny Franco will guide the Under-18 side.
In other Israeli basketball news, Hapoel Gilboa/Galil is close to finalizing a deal to face the Sacramento Kings and Omri Casspi on October 17 ahead of the start of next season.
The game will take place at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento and will mean Gilboa will join Maccabi Tel Aviv as the only Israeli sides to have faced an NBA team.
