Andy Ram and Liezel Huber advanced to the second round of the mixed doubles event Monday with a narrow win over Serbian Nenad Zimonjic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia. For Ram the victory avenged a loss to Zimonjic and Srebotnik in the US Open semifinals. Ram then played with Dinara Safina. The Israeli/South African duo will meet the Czech Republic's Frantisek Cermak and Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the second round on Tuesday. Ram and Huber, among the more successful players in the mixed doubles at Melbourne in recent history, needed 64 minutes, and three match points during the tiebreaker, before clinching the win 7-5, 7-6(9) on Monday. Huber advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 mixed event together with Ram's regular partner, Yoni Erlich. Last year she joined forces with Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe to reach the final. Ram was a semifinalist in Melbourne last year.
