Tzipi Obziler advanced to the second round of the Pattaya Women's Open in Thailand on Tuesday morning, defeating Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak 6-2, 6-2.
Obziler, who is ranked No. 139 in the world, reached the main draw of the WTA tournament after coming through three qualifying rounds. She will face Aiko Nakamura (56) of Japan in the next round.
Obziler's achievements in Thailand are expected to lift her approximately 15 places in the new rankings and take her ever closer to the top 100. Despite being only two months shy of her 34th birthday, which makes her one of the oldest players on tour, the Israeli is playing her best tennis ever and is aiming to enter the top 100 for the first time in her career this year.
Obziler raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set against Fedek (76) and closed out the set in the eighth game after 43 minutes. She continued to dominate in the second set and, despite losing the first game of the set, claimed six of the next seven games to wrap up the victory.
Obziler will try to duplicate Shahar Pe'er's success in Thailand last year, when she won the Pattaya tournament. Pe'er is currently in Israel on a three-week break from the WTA tour and is not defending her title.
