Shahar Pe'er and Sania Mirza advanced to the second round of the Acura Classic doubles tournament in San Diego late Wednesday night, defeating Angelika Bachmann and Hana Sromova 6-4, 6-0. The Jewish/Muslim duo has now won five straight doubles matches after claiming its first ever title at Stanford last week. Pe'er's and Mirza's doubles triumph on Wednesday came just a day after the two met in a first-round match in the singles tournament, which the Indian won in three sets. In their second-round encounter late Thursday, night Pe'er and Mirza faced Su-Wei Hsieh and Alla Kuryavtseva. They beat them in the semifinals at Stanford less than a week ago. In the singles event on Wednesday, Anna Chakvetadze began her pursuit of a third straight WTA Tour title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Meghann Shaughnessy. The Russian handled her American counterpart with little difficulty in her first match of the tournament. Chakvetadze will face Ai Sugiyama of Japan in the third round after the unseeded Sugiyama defeated No. 15 Sybille Bammer of Austria, 6-2, 7-6 (3). The victory extended Chakvetadze's winning streak to 10 matches. Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich, who are seeded fourth at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, will play their quarterfinal match on Friday. They will face the winner of the contest between Americans Scott Lipsky and David Martin and Benjamin Becker and Igo Kunitsyn. AP contributed to this report.
