Some 3,5000 hotel rooms and a commercial area will be built on Eilat's Eastern Lagoon that overlooks Akaba, the Tourism Ministry, together with Israel Lands Administration, announced Sunday.
The project aims to avoid an expected shortage of hotel rooms by the year of 2012, when 5 million tourists are expected to arrive in the area, the ministry said in a statement.
Tenders for the marketing of the land, 660 dunams (about 167 acres), will be published in the next months for the building of hotels, commercial areas and entertainment complexes. The Eastern Lagoon of Eilat is situated at the northern seashore of the city and is its last available piece of land to be marketed in the next few years. The area is highly attractive for its location, which overlooks Akaba, the Red Sea and the reddish mountains.
