Declaring it an issue of "national importance," Tourism Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich took official responsibility Sunday for Israeli roads and beaches around the Dead Sea. Ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting agreed to fund the Tourism Ministry's new reconstruction project with a total budget of NIS 200 million, transferring an initial NIS 8m. to fight the sinkholes that have emerged as a growing danger on roads located near the Dead Sea. As part of the cabinet agreement, the Tourism Ministry will also oversee the preservation of the area's beaches and the maintenance of infrastructure near its hotels.
