ACRI threatens to petition High Court over J'lem protests

The Association for Civil Rights threatened to petition the High Court of Justice after police would not provide approvals for two separate social-justice protests in central Jerusalem squares.

The police refusal to sanction the demonstrations on the grounds that the "the public is done with demonstrations" is unconstitutional, ACRI said in a statement.

Members of the social-justice movement that organized last summer's mass demonstrations in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and elsewhere throughout the country contacted police two weeks ago for assembly permits.

Police rejected the requests for both Zion Square, due to its proximity to the city's Light Rail, and Paris Square, because "the Jerusalem public is done with demonstrations blocking roads."

ACRI responded by saying the police reason for denying approval is unconstitutional and infringes upon the right to assemble.

Attorney Sharona Eliyahu-Chai said that police must "balance between the right to demonstrate and [the potential for] temporary traffic disruptions."
