Celebrations in the Gaza Strip following Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's speech at the UN General Assembly - where he said he had submitted the application for Palestinian independence - were conservative but people were overall supportive, Al Jazeera reported.

In Ramallah - where the mood was far more celebratory - thousands had gathered, waving flags and celebrating in the streets.

"Our president was applauded fifteen times," revelers said, according to an Al Jazeera reporter.
