An initiative by Saudi Arabia and Syria to reach a compromise over the UN-backed Hariri tribunal has failed, Lebanese politician Michel Aoun said on Tuesday according to Reuters.

The two countries have tried since July to forge a compromise which would mitigate tensions over the Hariri tribunal, Reuters said.Aoun, an ally of Hezbollah, accused supporters of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri for the failure to reach an agreement.

"Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's team has not responded to the (Saudi and Syrian) efforts and we have reached a dead end," Reuters quoted Aoun as saying.
