Ashkenazi: Syria represents real opportunity for Israel

Former IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi on Sunday stated that Syria represents a real opportunity for Israel, saying that any regime that replaces Syrian President Bashar Assad would not be as bad as the current government.
"Iran will lose its most important and only state-ally in the region," he said at the Jerusalem Post Conference in New York. The fall of Assad's government would also weaken Lebanese Hezbollah, Ashkenazi explained, which is widely seen as an Iranian proxy, and a staunch ally of Assad's.
"For us, I think, this would be good news," he said, adding that he is unsure if and when it would happen.
Assad has been battling opposition rebels in a conflict that has surpassed 13 months, and claimed the lives of more than 9,000 people according to the United Nations.
