Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Friday said that he does not see a possibility that Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti will be pardoned and released from Israeli jail if he is elected to replace Mamhoud Abbas as president of the Palestinian Authority. Ayalon spoke with Israel Radio a day after Abbas announced that he had "no desire" to run in the presidential election in the PA territories, slated for January 24. Abbas's decision to withdraw from the PA presidential race was an internal Palestinian affair, Ayalon told the radio station, adding that Israel would not interfere in internal matters of other entities, just as it expects others not to interfere in internal Israeli affairs. However, Ayalon stressed that Israel, the US, the West and the Palestinians all have an interest in having a stable, responsible, pragmatic and moderate leadership in the PA.
