Bus drivers to be fined NIS 500 for idling engines

June 22, 2010 14:19

Bus drivers who do not turn off their engines while parked will be subject to an NIS 500 fine according to a new regulation approved by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz on Tuesday. The regulation empowers any municipal inspector to levy the fine. The regulation must be approved by the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee.

Reducing idling bus engines will cut down on air pollution. Until now, running the engine while parked for more than ten minutes has been illegal and cause for a hearing, but has never been enforced, according to Katz.
