PARIS — Officials on Monday said a 17-year-old armed with swords has taken several small children and their teacher hostage at a pre-school in eastern France.

A police official and an official with the city hall said the hostage taking occurred during the morning in the city of Besancon. The officials were not authorized to be named according to their office policy.

The police official said five of the children have been released.
