Brazilian President Lula da Silva criticized Israel's blockade of Gaza in a Wednesday meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Israel Radio reported.

Da Silva said that the blockade on Gaza will not bring peace, and expressed support for an independent Palestinian state.

According to Israel Radio, da Silva is in favor a peace initiative in which Israel would give the Golan Heights to Syria. Assad answered that such a plan would guarantee peace and stability.
