Berlin -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he was "very worried about the violence in Gaza and southern Israel," but affirmed that Israel has the right to protect its population, a spokesperson said Thursday.

Westerwelle condemned Palestinian rocket attacks against Israel, adding that the current situation should in no way be allowed to escalate and civilian casualties must be avoided.
