The Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip has prohibited females from smoking tobacco water pipes - also known as "nargile" or "shisha" - while in public, AFP reported Sunday.

"The police have decided to ban women from smoking water pipes in open, public places because it is against our customs, traditions and social norms," Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman Ihab al-Ghussein told AFP.

Business owners reported that in the last several days police have ordered a halt to serving customers tobacco water pipes, but were later told that the prohibition applied strictly to females and minors.
