Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos was pessimistic on Tuesday towards the possibility of Israel joining the European Union. It is inconceivable, he said, that Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman would answer to recently appointed European Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton.
Speaking at a Herzliya Conference panel on the subject of Europe’s role in the world, Moratinos stated that the EU of the 21st century is interested in playing a significant role in the Middle East. He added that Israel enjoys a special status among European nations.
Moratinos also said that Israel and the EU governments were responsible for improving Israel’s image in the European public eye. Even brothers don’t always see eye to eye, he said, referring to criticism voiced against Israel’s military operations in the Palestinian territories.
