Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the announcement that former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir died on Saturday, saying that he "served as an example of loyalty to the State of Israel and to the eternal principles of the Jewish people."

Netanyahu added that Shamir was among the founders of Israel who "fought for the freedom of the Jewish people in their own country."

The prime minister stated that Shamir "lead the State of Israel with deep loyalty to the nation and the country."
