New fronts open in Carmel fire; routes 2,4 closed

Fire spread to new areas in the Carmel on Friday despite the efforts of firefighters who were aided by the first forein firefighting aircraft which arrived to help control the blaze.
Firefighters were battling flames on several fronts, including Chai Bar, the entrance to the village of Usafiya, and the area between Usafiya and Dalia on Friday as the Carmel fires continued to rage.
The parts of routes 2 and 4 leading to that region of the country were closed, effectively closing off all major approaches to the North.
The fire was also spreading to the Haifa suburb of Denya, where homes were in danger from the flames.
