BEIRUT - At least nine civilians were killed on Thursday in shelling of residential areas of the besieged city of Misrata by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, a Libyan rebel spokesman said.

There was no independent confirmation of the toll in the areas of Qarara, Karzaz and Zaweyat al Mahjoub.

"The Gaddafi forces bombarded residential areas in the city today and there are nine civilians killed and 20 wounded," Abdelbasset Abu Mzereiq told Reuters by telephone from the city.
