Parents of preschoolers in Tel Aviv and Eilat to hold one day strike

Parents of preschoolers in Tel Aviv and Eilat announced they will hold a one day strike on Friday as part of a protest demanding local authorities fund a second caregiver per class.

The strike, backed by the National Parents' Association, aims to draw to attention to the "inequality" in the Israeli education system and calls on the government to allocate a second caregiver for every class of children aged three to four years old. According to the parents' association, in wealthier municipalities a second caregiver is funded and provided for by the local authority, while other lesser financially established municipalities have to make do without a second assistant.

“The conditions in preschools harm the good and welfare of the children: overcrowded classrooms of 35 children taken care of by one preschool teacher and one assistant alone cannot answer the needs of so many children at this young age,” wrote the National Parents’ Association along with several heads of municipalities and local parent associations in an open letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, acting as temporary Education Minister, and several members of Knesset.
