US General David Petraeus, head of US Central Command, praised concentration camp survivors for building a country, Israel, that is “one of America’s great allies” in a speech commemorating the Holocaust at the US Capitol Thursday.

The program was dedicated to the American service members who had liberated the camps 65 years ago, 120 of whom attended the memorial event. The division that Petraeus led in Iraq in 2003, the 101st Airborne, liberated a Dachau subcamp.
