NOVO-OGARYOVO - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered officials on Tuesday to check Russian nuclear facilities and to review the country's ambitious plans to develop atomic energy amid Japan's nuclear crisis.

Nuclear chief Sergei Kiriyenko also said that Russian experts did not expect a nuclear explosion even under the worst possible scenario for the stricken Japanese nuclear plant. He added Russia's Far East was not threatened by the accident.

Putin spoke at his residence at Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow.
