Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday asked Egypt to pressure Hamas into agreeing on the appointment of Salam Fayyad as the new Palestinian unity government's prime minister, Israel Radio said citing an Al-Quds al-Arabi report.

According to the report, Abbas said Fayyad's appointment would contribute to the process of the United Nations recognizing a Palestinian state and will prevent the United States and Israel from undermining the new government.
