Former US president Jimmy Carter was scheduled to meet with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in Cairo on Thursday, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported Thursday, citing an Egyptian NGO.

Carter was in Cairo monitoring the Egyptian presidential elections, according to the report.

Mashaal was expected to brief Carter on the latest developments in Hamas-Fatah reconciliation efforts and the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, according to Ma'an.
