Opposition forces fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad have overrun a strategic air base in the country's northern Aleppo province after prolonged battles lasting months, AFP cited the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as reporting on Tuesday.

"The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (jihadist group) and other opposition groups took total control at dawn today of Minnigh air base," AFP quoted the Observatory as saying.
