Russia expresses 'grave concern' about violence in Syria

UNITED NATIONS - Russia expressed deep concern on Monday about the situation in Syria where pro-democracy protests have deteriorated into bloody turmoil.
"We should draw serious conclusions regarding the situation in Syria. It remains a cause of grave concern for Russia and the whole international community," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the UN Security Council.
A popular uprising against President Bashar Assad erupted a year ago. The United Nations estimates Syrian security forces have killed well over 7,500 people. Syria said in December that "terrorists" had killed more than 2,000 soldiers and police.
