French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Wednesday that the paratroopers killed earlier this week were victims of "terrorist execution."
The soldiers were allegedly killed by Mohamed Merah, the same man suspected of gunning down 4 Jews- three of them children- in Toulouse.
Speaking at their funeral in Montauban, France, Sarkozy said that the victims: "were gunned down because they were French soldiers. Because they were the French army... It is the French army that the killer was targeting, and it waa the French republic that was hit. No matter the colour of their skin or their creed... these soldiers were prepared to die for France."
Sarkozy also mentioned the murder of the Jews in Toulouse, calling it "cold blooded" and "cowardly."
