The Shas party's spiritual guide Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said he is opposed to the evacuation of illegally built settlements in Judea and Samaria, Army Radio reported Wednesday.

"The settlements we're talking about were supported by this government and granted rights by this government," Ovadia said at a meeting with outpost representatives and heads of the Yesha Council, an umbrella organization of municipal councils for Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Yosef urged Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who also attended the meeting, to press Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to prevent the destruction of illegally constructed outposts.

The prime minister, on Monday threw his support behind court-mandated demolitions of West Bank settler homes built privately on Palestinian property.
