Spain says may close Syria embassy on Tuesday

MADRID - Spain may withdraw its ambassador in Syria on Tuesday as the military continue to crack down on rebels there, Spain's foreign minister said.
"The Spanish Embassy may even be closed today," Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said at a briefing in Madrid. He said a final decision would depend on the outcome of Tuesday's meeting of senior European Union member states' diplomats in Brussels.
Spain would maintain a diplomatic presence at the EU delegation in Syria "to monitor the situation of Spaniards in the zone, maintain contacts with the opposition and send a political message that what is happening in Syria is not acceptable", Garcia-Margallo said.
The United States, Britain, France, Switzerland and Canada have already closed their embassies in Syria's capital, Damascus, as violence intensifies across the country.
