AMMAN - Syrian forces shelled the old quarter of Deraa of Saturday and stormed the main Omari Mosque, focal point of pro-democracy protests in the southern city, two residents said.

"The shelling has stopped. There are snipers on the roof of the mosque," one of the residents said, adding that the forces, backed by tanks, appear to be in control of the old quarter for the first time since attacking the city on Monday.
