Syrian President Bashar Assad said the country would be ready for political parties to submit applications within a week, paving the way for possible elections in as little as three months.

Speaking on Syrian national TV, Assad said the most logical thing would be elections in February, 2012.

Protesters in Syria have been calling for Assad's ouster for the past number of months, and the regime has come under international criticism for its violent crackdown on demonstrations.
