Typhoon Tembin tears through Taiwan

Typhoon Tembin flooded large areas, toppled houses and uprooted trees as it tore across southern Taiwan on Friday, Taiwanese media reported.
Pounding rain brought severe flooding to southern parts of the island, broadcaster CTS showed. The typhoon made landfall early Friday morning, and the centre had left the island within an hour and headed out to sea.
The central Weather Bureau said that almost 600mm of rain fell in one area- the largest quantity since 1943, the Taipei Times newspaper reported.
