The US State Department on Thursday issued a travel alert to US citizens, recommending "deferring non-essential travel to Tunisia at this time."

Noting that unrest has spread to the Tunisian capital, including popular tourist destinations, the travel alert warned that the "spontaneous and unpredictable events have degenerated on several occasions into violent clashes," resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. Additionally, the alert advised US citizens already in the country to "defer non-essential movement."
