US gov't asks court to rethink CIA renditions suit

The US Department of Justice is asking a federal appeals court to reconsider its decision to allow a Boeing Co. subsidiary to be sued for allegedly flying terrorism suspects to secret prisons overseas to be tortured. In April, a panel of judges from the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that the lawsuit dealing with the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" program could proceed. The government earlier had successfully invoked the "state secrets" law that blocks the release of evidence it deems potentially harmful to national security. But the appeals court said the prisoners can try to prove their case without top-secret information. Federal prosecutors filed court documents Friday asking that a full panel of judges rehear the case.
