US welcomes Lebanon's payment of Special Tribunal

The United States welcomed Wednesday Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati's announcement that Lebanon had paid its $36 million share of the annual funding for the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
"The Special Tribunal’s work represents a chance for Lebanon to move beyond its long history of impunity for political violence," US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in Washington DC. "The Lebanese authorities’ support for, and cooperation with, the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is a critical international commitment."
The court has been investigating the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.
