Watchdog worried more Turkish reporters could face jail

VIENNA - Some 57 journalists are now in jail in Turkey, most under the nation's anti-terror law, and that number could grow as a result of hundreds of ongoing trials, Europe's rights and security watchdog said on Monday.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) urged Turkey, a European Union membership candidate, to reform its media law and protect free speech.

The imprisonment of several journalists in an anti-government conspiracy investigation has aroused concerns that Turkey is becoming more authoritarian and created another obstacle in its bid to join the 27-nation EU.
