Interior Minister Eli Yishai warned Thursday that the ongoing problem of infiltrators and refugees could call Israel's Jewish character into question if not addressed.
"The time has come for the state of Israel and its citizens to address the refugee problem on par with the other problem it faces," Yishai said in a statement.
"I hope that the recent events will awaken Israel's citizens to act, before the fact of Israel as a Jewish State will come into question."
