Two people were killed on Highway 4 near the Yavne interchange early Friday morning after a passing car crashed into them while they were standing on the side of the road.
When the car of Mazel Sofer, a 42-year-old from Kiryat Gat, broke down, taxi driver Sa'adia Nisim, 60 from Yavne, pulled over to help her. Sofer and Nisim were then hit by a passing car, killing them both.
The driver and passenger of the passing car, two men in their 40s, were moderately to severely injured, but fully conscious, and taken to Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot.
Mendy Haviv, head of the ZAKA rescue and recovery organization for Shfela, said that the two men were badly injured on the lower half of their bodies.
Magen David Adom paramedics said that when they arrived at the scene of the crash, Sofer and Nisim were visibly seriously injured, unconscious and without pulses. They tried to treat them but were not able to save their lives due to the gravity of the crash.
Yaron Weinberg, head of the traffic accident unit for the Shfela region police, said an investigation into the accident was underway.
