The choice of Shmuly and Shaffir signaled a generational change in the ruling party and may have set them up as the main contestants in the next Labor leadership race.
The sun came out, and so did Labor’s members. There were long lines in polling stations across the country, forcing an additional half hour of voting.
“Today we are electing the best team for the next Knesset and the next government of Israel,” party Chairman Avi Gabbay said.
The 44 candidates running will be competing over very few realistic slots. Party leader Avi Gabbay will be first on the list.
Labor has focused until now on socioeconomic issues under Gabbay, a decision that has led in part to the party receiving only four to seven seats in polls published over the weekend.
